Women Lead YYC is a program designed to support women who want to lead, influence or participate in collective action in order to improve their community. This program explores mindsets, leadership approaches and communication strategies that boost the chances of successfully influencing change. We launched this program in January 2018 and were overwhelmed by the number of women who expressed interest in taking part.
Participants of Women Lead YYC:
- spread awareness
- create opportunities for learning and discussion
- support women’s leadership
- focus on critical issues that matter to women
- bring a gender-plus lens to public policy in our outreach and research efforts
Women Lead YYC will meet six times on Monday evenings, between January 20 and March 2. Sessions will run from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm, and will cover topics like community organizing, strategic communications, movement building, connecting with allies, and addressing systemic barriers and root causes of community problems.
We’re assembling a group of 15 – 20 motivated women who are interested in building a network, and working for change at a local level. Sessions will take place at the Women’s Centre, and child-minding is available for participants by request. This program is open to anyone who identifies as a woman.
The Women’s Centre of Calgary was involved in the development of the curriculum with the Community Development Learning Initiative, since then we have extensively adapted the curriculum with a focus on Women in Leadership in response to the needs of women in our community.
This curriculum serves as a framework — not a script — for community development learning. It is provided under a Creative Commons license in the spirit of making it accessible and encouraging innovative use.
We recognize that leadership takes on many different forms. Whether you have years of experience working to influence change, or are interested in connecting with a group of inspiring women, Women Lead YYC is for you. We’re looking for women who want to build community, connect with others, and hone their skills.
Our spring session will run Tuesdays from May 5 – June 9, 2020 from 5:30-8:00 P.M.
