This Friday the Women’s Centre will be taking part in an important annual event – Take Back the Night. The purpose of Take Back the Night is to create awareness and take a stand against violence against women.
The first Take Back the Night event in Canada occurred in 1978. This year’s event will showcase speakers that will talk about how far we have come in Calgary, but how far we still have to go.
Last year, 76% of women at the Women’s Centre reported that they had or were in a violent relationship. To eradicate violence against women, we have a long way to go.
The event will start at 8:00pm, this Friday, September 23, 2011 at Connaught Park (11th Street and 14th Avenue SW) with local musicians and speakers. Following the performances women will take to the streets for a march to symbolize women’s right to walk alone safely. After the march, participants will be invited to share their experiences with violence against women.
Look for me (Leah) with the Women’s Centre banner! And/or arrive at 7:30 to make your own sign.
