Congratulations to Women’s Centre volunteer, Deb Lee! Deb was recently recognized by the Canada Sports Hall of Fame as the 2013 Everyday Sports Hero™ for her volunteer work in the Bridgeland-Riverside community.
The Everyday Sports Hero™ Program is “a national program that promotes, recognizes, and celebrates the grassroots community leaders that make participation and leadership in sport possible for others” (Canada Sports Hall of Fame). This award was given out for the first time in 2013, making Deb its very first recipient.
Deb is passionate about building community. She says, “No matter what our circumstances, each of us can make a difference to others. It is through our individual and collective actions that our communities become better places to live–for everyone.”
In addition to more than five years of service as a volunteer at the Women’s Centre, Deb is also an advocate for healthy and active living. Some of her community contributions include supporting the work of a community development social worker in promoting a walking group, writing a monthly column dedicated to health and wellness in the Bridgeland-Riverside newsletter, and engaging seniors in activities that promote healthy aging.
As part of the Everyday Sports Hero™ program, Deb’s award sponsored the refurbishing of a Bridgeland-Riverside baseball diamond. Last month, volunteers joined Deb to paint tables and benches, plant flowers and trees and make other enhancements to the baseball field.
