“The clinic gave me courage,” one woman said after attending a one-on-one meeting with a volunteer lawyer at the Women’s Centre.
For many of us, the thought of stepping inside of a lawyer’s office can be quite intimidating. In an effort to make legal aid more accessible for women in the community, each week, a group of dedicated female lawyers volunteer their time at the Women’s Centre of Calgary. Volunteers provide one-on-one meetings with women who seek legal guidance around issues related to family and non-family law. In a safe and comfortable setting, women are able to ask questions, gather information and explore legal options pertaining to their own unique situations.
Empowered with knowledge, another one woman said, “I know exactly what direction I need to go in and how to assist myself.”
“I feel I am more confident to take the next step and move on with my life. Thank you for the assistance,” another legal clinic attendee said.
The legal advice clinic is one of several volunteer-supported programs offered at the Women’s Centre. Current clinics include family and non-family law. All appointments are free and confidential for women in Calgary and area and can be made by calling the Women’s Centre at (403) 264-1155.
Please note – due to demand for family law advising, waitlist for these clinics is a possibility. Any female lawyers who specialize in family law and are interested in volunteering (time commitment typically two hours, once per month) may contact Carolina Dalgleish at carolina@womenscentrecalgary.org.
