Top Ways to Donate

There are so many ways you can contribute to the Women’s Centre of Calgary:

Your generous donation to the Women’s Centre will help change a woman’s life. Your donation funds our community-capacity building programs, emergency basic need assistance and mobilizes women to learn about pressing social issues in our communities. Basic Needs Items
The Women’s Centre welcomes donations of Basic Needs Items (Gifts in Kind) if they correspond to our current needs and if the Centre can benefit from the donations. In-kind giving is a donation of any non-cash product or good. While we cannot receive donations of clothing, furniture or household goods, as we have very limited space, we are currently in need of:

  • Diapers (size four and up)
  • Shampoo & conditioner
  • Lotion (hand and body)
  • Body wash
  • Deodorant
  • Sanitary pads/napkins
  • New, unwrapped toys
  • Gift Cards for grocery stores
  • Plastic & reusable bags (new and used)
  • Toothbrushes
  • Face care products
  • Toilet paper

Please note that a tax receipt from the Women’s Centre will be issued, if requested, once the donated item is received by the recipient organization. To receive a tax receipt, the original receipt for the product must be submitted. If the value of an individual item is more than $500, there must be an independent appraisal.

The Women’s Centre does accept donations of Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Points for the Basic Needs Program. Log-in to the Shoppers site here, then select “donate/transfer points” on the menu at the top of the page.

Host an Event! (Third Party Fundraising)
In the past, several community organizations have hosted fundraising events and designated the proceeds to the Women’s Centre of Calgary. We are sincerely grateful for the support we receive from these community organizations.

In the interests of protecting our reputation and charitable status, we ask that organizations hosting third-party fundraisers follow our policy and guidelines:

Third Party Fundraising Policy and Guidelines

The Women’s Centre of Calgary receives inquiries each year from individuals and organizations that want to stage their own fundraising events in support of our charitable purposes. These “Third-Party Events” are run by individuals or groups that are not affiliated with the Women’s Centre.

A “Third Party Fundraiser” is defined as any organization or individual that uses the Women’s Centre name and logo in promotional material for an event and donates a portion or all of the proceeds from the event to the Women’s Centre.

The Women’s Centre reserves the right to establish partnerships with third party fundraisers that align with our mission. All Third Party Fundraising Requests and Activities must receive approval from the Women’s Centre. In order to support and monitor Third Party Fundraising Events, the Women Centre requires all Third Party Fundraisers to submit a budget and signed Fundraising Guidelines Form for review.

Third Party Fundraisers are expected to sign the Fundraising Agreement Form in acknowledgment of their acceptance.

Host a Coffee Party
Host a Coffee Connections Party as a way to spread the word and raise funds for the Women’s Centre work. How it works: Supporters host a party of their choosing (ie: Cocktail Night, Sushi Party, Pub Night, Afternoon Tea) and invite whomever they would like (friends, relatives, co-workers). We can provide information booklets and speakers so that your guests can learn about the work we do at the Women’s Centre. Guests are then provided the opportunity to donate to the Women’s Centre. All the proceeds from the coffee parties go towards Women’s Centre services and programming.

Planned Giving - Leaving a Legacy
Your consideration in providing a planned gift – whether a bequest in your will, a gift of life insurance or securities, or a charitable annuity – will make a lasting contribution to the lives and communities where you choose to direct your support.

We can support more women with your help. By giving women the support, connections and community they need, you will be creating a legacy that has a lasting impact for generations to come.

You can plan to give in a number of ways:

  • Bequest – you leave a portion (or all) of your estate to the Women’s Centre in your will.
  • Securities – a highly beneficial way of giving to the Women’s Centre that can result in significant tax credits to you.
  • Life insurance policies – donating a life insurance policy to the Women’s Centre (even when not fully paid for) gives you an immediate tax benefit.
  • Retirement savings – transform tax liabilities into a charitable gift by donating money from your retirement funds.
  • Real estate – a gift of property can serve the Women’s Centre in many ways.
  • Charitable remainder trust – this involves transferring cash, property, securities or real estate into a trust, all or part of which is donated to the Women’s Centre following your death.
  • Residual interest gift – a contract where the Women’s Centre receives future ownership of a valuable asset (generally real estate or art) but you maintain use of it for life.
  • Limited partnership interests – you can donate to the Women’s Centre all or part of your interests in a limited partnership.

If you are considering a planned gift of $1,000 or more, one of our coordinators can advise you how your gift can make a difference – both to the community and to your estate. For information, contact:

Gift of Securities
There are many benefits of donating a gift of securities to the Women’s Centre.
It is the most tax-effective way to donate to a charity with the capital gains tax rate now at ZERO per cent. You will receive a tax receipt for the full appreciated value of the donation without incurring any capital gains tax!

The impact of your contribution is maximized because more money goes to where it is needed most in the community.

Highly appreciated securities provide the means to make a significant, low-cost gift.Your charitable donation credit could be more than the purchase price if the securities have appreciated significantly.

Donating securities to the Women’s Centre—it’s fast, it’s easy and both you and women in your community benefit!
