More than 300 families in Calgary have access to at least a few more meals every month thanks to one of many volunteer-supported programs at the Women’s Centre.

Every week volunteers kindly pick-up and deliver food from various locations in the City. When the food delivery arrives, a team of in-house volunteers and staff line up to relay boxes into the Centre (advice for new volunteers – avoid wearing white on these days!). Together, these volunteers hurriedly unload, unpack, count and organize the donations in an attempt to create a grocery store experience providing an array of choices including fresh produce, dairy and bread and non-perishables.

“A lot of women and their families get food that they would not otherwise have access to thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers,” says Volunteer Coordinator, Filsan Abdi.

Words cannot fully express the sincere appreciation staff and women who use the Centre have for our Thursday food program donors and volunteers. It is truly a coordinated effort.

Together, we can help make a difference in the lives of women in need in Calgary through something so simple – the gift of food.

A special thank-you to our donors, Calgary Inter-faith Food Bank, COBS Bread and Fort Calgary’s Community Garden, for continuing to support the Women’s Centre’s Thursday Food Program.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering for the food program can contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Filsan at filsan@womenscentrecalgary.org or 403-264-1155. We are currently seeking two additional bakery pick-up volunteers.
