To celebrate the official opening of our new space, more than 200 people from the community attended our Grand Opening and Annual General Meeting last week.
To start off the evening, a ceremonial smudging of our new space took place – an Aboriginal tradition in which the smoke of sage or sweet grass is used to invite good energy and positive spirit. In addition to touring the new space, guests were also invited to take part in a group ribbon tossing and cutting ceremony, take a spin on the trivia wheel, and leave their wishes for the new Women’s Centre on a wish tree at the event.
“It was just amazing and I was grateful to be there. The singing and drumming was very special and I loved the ribbon cutting and how inclusive it was,” says Sarah, one of the attendees.
Now bordering the communities of Crescent Heights and Bridgeland-Riverside, the new Women’s Centre at 39-4 Street will continue providing women with a safe space to receive or provide support, connect with others, and build community through a variety of programs. With much more space, we will also be looking at new programs for single mothers, senior women and teen girls.
“I am so thrilled about the new Women Centre, and I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the people in Calgary. Their gifts have helped us create a beautiful new home that we can all be proud of,” says Patrice, volunteer at the Women’s Centre.
