Tell us a bit about yourself!

My name is Nicole Fernandes. I am very excited to be starting my final year of the Bachelor of Social Work Program at University of Calgary. In my spare time, I usually enjoy hanging out with friends, and discovering new places to eat and different places to travel to!!

What is your personal definition of feminism?

Advocacy for changes in society that provide women with an equal opportunity and rights – while also accounting for the intersectionality of the marginalization some women face in being a woman who is also a visible minority or may be living with a disability.  Feminism, to me, is in the equality of rights among all individuals

What brought you to the Women’s Centre of Calgary?

I have always had a passion for working with children, and I am really looking forward to meeting all the wonderful girls attending our girls’ programs, as well as having the opportunity to meet and work with women of all ages and backgrounds!

What’s one thing you hope to learn at the Women’s Centre?

I am hoping to learn about the contemporary local issues women face here in Calgary, and how I can better support and advocate for women’s equal rights!

Describe a woman who you admire or who has influenced your life.

A woman I admire is my sister. I am always able to count on her for anything – whether it’s borrowing her clothes, or just needing someone to go to for advice!
