Position: Executive Director

Scope and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will advance the vision and mission of the Women’s Centre and will achieve the Centre’s outcomes through practices guided by the organization’s core theory approaches and  values. The Executive Director leads a team of 18 staff (3 direct reports) and inspires a group of 800+ volunteers. This is a big position, with big shoes to fill. It will require commitment and passion to build on the Women’s Centre of Calgary’s excellent reputation and success. This position will work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure a continued leadership position of the Centre in the advancement of feminist capacity building through innovation, advocacy, and action. This position will build on the existing programs and reach, and build capacity to adapt to changing needs. The Executive Director position requires a commitment to continuously improve, adapt to changing community needs, and ensure a healthy, vibrant, and financially sustainable organization.

Specific Responsibilities:
This is a critical role in the Women’s Centre of Calgary’s continued success and sustainability. The Executive Director will be responsible for ensuring the following:

  •  Actively engaging the Board of Directors in the strategic direction, purpose, and overall organizational wellness;
  • Advancing the Centre’s reputation and visibility as a leader in modeling feminist values, building capacity, and addressing structural and society inequities that women face, and as a Centre of Excellence for program development;
  • Increasing the social impact of the Centre’s programs by ensuring increased reach and accessibility of existing programs and adapting to changing needs;
  • Advancing the Centre’s truth and reconciliation work, and addressing systemic racism;
  • Increasing, strengthening, and diversifying the organization’s funding sources;
  • Building strong relationships with key government representatives and stakeholders;
  • Ensuring strong communications with the community, sharing its impact and advocating for the Women’s Centre’s values, ways of work, and programs;
  • Leading and developing a successful team that is fully engaged and committed to the vision and mission, and is fully accountable with a clear understanding of each person’s role within the organization;
  • Ensuring coaching and mentoring of the staff team towards continued high performance and leadership;
  • Ensuring appropriate fiscal controls to ensure compliance accountability to the Board, funders, and regulatory bodies;
  • Ensuring continued improvements in organizational and operational performance; and,
  • Being a highly recognized leader in the community; presenting on key trends, issues, and program development in advancing the needs of women.

Desired Candidate Abilities, Background and Experience: 

Given the role this individual will play in the Women’s Centre of Calgary’s continued success, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following education, experience, and personal characteristics:

Education

  • A relevant undergraduate degree, such as Social Work, Social Sciences, Public Administration or Public Policy; and,
  • A post graduate degree is desirable.

Experience

  •  A minimum of 5 years of leadership experience, either as head of a small to medium size nonprofit, or association, or a larger department;
  • A background of working with a Board of Directors is an asset;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and interest in reconciliation and anti-racism work;
  • A demonstrated ability to develop programs that lift and create capacity within a community;
  • Proven ability to attract and retain resources for the continued success and sustainability of the organization, including human resources, funding, and in-kind support;
  • Proven success in developing and implementing a strategic plan that ensures movement towards achieving the organization’s vision, and creating access and capacity building opportunities for its community;
  • An operations orientation – the proven ability to create an organization that continuously strives for process improvement;
  • The proven ability to build strong relationships, networks, and prospects within and across sectors;
  • Demonstrated experience adapting to changing needs, including the use of technology;
  • Strong financial acumen and experience in operations. This includes the development of budgets, achieving budget goals, and accurate financial forecasting, monitoring and reporting;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, motivate, inspire, and engage employees and volunteers in the organizations mission;
  • An understanding of the differences between clinical, charitable and community development models;
  • Demonstrated experience addressing systemic barriers which impact women’s lives;
  • A background in the social services sector would be an asset; and,
  • A history of working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders from both the public and private sector
