Christmas and New Years are colonized holidays and for some indigenous people the holidays can trigger trauma from residential schools. The following greetings are improvised greeting used by indigenous communities if they choose to recognize the holidays.

Cree: ᒥᔪ ᐅᒉᐦᑐᐏᑮᓯᑲᓂᓯᐠ  – miyo-ocêhtowi-kîsikanisik (northern cree pronunciation but very similar to the plains cree dialect)

Translates to “Happy Kissing Day!” They use this greeting because on New Year’s they give each other a kiss.

Blackfoot:  Iitamiitotopa (ee dawm ee do dope)

Translates too “Happy to arrive to the new winter”

Stoney Nakoda: Da-hah-pinc-ya

Translates to “take care of yourself”. Common greeting used during the holidays, meaning during the holidays (take care of yourself in the New Year). – Bobbi-Jo & Tanya
