Join us, with Artist in Residence Penny Gunderson, for Mending Circle Workshops. Come for just one or both! We will be working on slow stitching fabric patches and then attaching them to a simple cotton tote bag that you can take home. All materials and bags will be supplied. This workshop will be held in-person at the Women’s Centre while following AB Health guidelines. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic child-minding will not be available during this workshop.
As part of these workshops, she will be photographing women’s hands while sewing (this is optional). The photos are black and white printed on silk and then dipped in encaustic wax medium. Both the encaustic photos and the women’s completed stitching projects will be part of an upcoming art exhibit in the Arts Commons +15 Gallery.
There is a special atmosphere when women bond over hand stitching. Historically, sewing and quilting circles were a way that women found companionship, sharing of skills and connection to the community. A goal of the Mending Circle Project is to give women today an opportunity to gather, share and strengthen one another while working on simple hand sewn projects.
This workshop is open to women-identifying individuals only. For more information, please email rsvp@womenscentrecalgary.org.
Due to health guidelines, we will be limiting the number of registrants in workshops so please let us know if you are unable to attend. In the Women’s Centre we ask that participants socially distance and wear a mask during workshops. We will have masks and hand sanitizer available. To maintain a healthy and safe community, we trust that each person will conduct a personal self-assessment before coming to the Centre. We ask that you do not attend the event if you have a fever (38C or 100F and up) or new or worsening cough. Unless related to a pre-existing condition, do not attend if you have sore throat, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain, shortness of breath, if you have travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days or if you have had contact with anyone with COVID-19.
